Latex Free Gloves Available in a Variety of Materials

With the rising awareness of latex allergy issues, several new types of latex free gloves have gained favor in the past several years. Each of them offer unique advantages but, at the same time, each of them come with a certain amount of compromise in terms of barrier protection, economy and comfort. No single glove provides the "perfect" solution for all applications and it’s nearly impossible to standardize on a single type of glove material without encountering difficulties.

  • Vinyl is the most economical latex free glove alternative. It’s been around for many years but in general may be associated with reduced barrier protection due to its susceptibility to tears, breakage and pinholes compared to latex.

Vinyl food service gloves are a popular choice for many food environments. This is because having a high level of protection and durability is not as critical as they are in the operating room at a hospital, for example. Vinyl gloves are also less expensive, making them a more economical option. Their fit is somewhat more loose, and they are good for low-risk or short term tasks when dealing with non-hazardous materials.
  • Nitrile medical gloves have become more popular latex free glove in the past several years and offer excellent tear resistance and chemical resistance. Made from synthetic rubber, nitrile gloves are an excellent choice if you’re concerned about latex allergies. Nitrile gloves are also more puncture resistant when compared to other gloves.  They also tend to have a high level of sensitivity and conform to your hand for a better fit. Nitrile gloves can be worn for longer periods of time and are appropriate for riskier circumstances where infectious substances or chemicals are present.

  • Chloroprene has become a popular latex free glove in the operating room and is the most "latex-like" synthetic glove film available. It offers superior comfort and good resistance to a wide range of chemicals, especially acids, alkalies and aliphatic solvents, as well as biological hazards. Protects against infectious fluids and chemotherapy drugs. Combines the comfort of latex and strength of nitrile.
